Class A, B, C, D, E and F each take a different agent. CO2 for live electrical, wet chemical for cooking oil.
Capacity
1 unit per 200 sq m
At least one unit of 1A rating per 200 sq m of floor area, minimum one per floor.
Height
1.0 m to 1.5 m
Measured to the handle, with the base clear of the floor and the unit on a bracket or stand.

Which edition applies
NBCS 2026 replaced NBC 2016 at BIS level in April 2026. Most state bye laws still refer to the older edition, and states such as Karnataka and Tamil Nadu add their own requirements on top. BuildVisor keeps the editions apart, tells you which one is current at BIS level, and lets you work to whichever one your approval authority is actually asking for.
